Volunteer for Town Board or Commission

What many people do not realize is that much of East Hartford's municipal government is still run by volunteers. These volunteers are appointed officials that address issues such as land use regulation, veterans affairs, needs of seniors, people with disabilities and more. Traditionally the two Town Committees, Republican and Democrat, receive applications and then make endorsements, or recommendations to the Mayor and Town Council.  The Mayor submits the names to the Town Council who vote to make appointments.  There are no specific requirements to serve other than a willingness to devote the time, energy and talent necessary to do the job.  Some commissions do offer training and on-going educational opportunities.   While the Town Committees do tend to endorse members of their own political party, there have been times where unaffiliated voters have been endorsed.  Those with special talents and or experience applicable to a board or commission are encouraged to come forward regardless of political affiliation.
